The story of Bill & Bob

Bill and Bob both inherited $100k each, and each decided to start a courier business delivering packages throughout their respective cities.

Bill decided to spend $90k on a Rolls Royce Silver Shadow, thinking if he had the “Best” business would be great. He spent the remaining $10k on advertising and expenses for the year.

Bob on the other hand purchased a Ford Transit van for $30k, and invested the remaining $70k on advertising and expenses for the year.

Which person do you think is still in business after the first year?

Well, Bob of course, Bill would have gone broke in the first 3 months!

Now you might think this example sounds a little silly, and what does it have to do with a website?

The answer is, everything! You see, I have seen so many “Bills” it is just not funny, people who have spent a fortune on websites and in reality have not made one sale from it.

Let me break the news to you here, the best looking most flash website in the world is not going to make you a cent if nobody knows about it or can find it. Simple.

Look, ask yourself this, how fancy is the #1 website in the world (Google)? Not really a gem of a design is it. But it makes, well $billions each year.

Apply this thinking to your website. Not that I am saying to have an ugly website, but please don’t blow $10 grand on a design! If you have a $10 grand budget, spend $3 grand on the design and development, and $7 grand on SEO and SEM for the rest of the year, you will be so far in front you will want to jump for joy.

These days with the likes of WordPress, Magento, Joomla etc, the cost of developing an awesome looking and fully functional easy to maintain website have definitely come down from the days of “hand” coding each page in HTML.
